Gallery Hours: Thursday to Sunday, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
Kiwanis Longhouse Centre for the Visual Arts
1710 - 56th St., Tsawwassen, B.C. (Located next to the South Delta Recreation Centre) (604) 943-3313

From The Board
- At the last board meeting, a new motion was passed stating the following
Whenever necessary, and at the discretion of the Board of Directors, a disciplinary letter will be sent to a member for conduct that is contradictory to any rules or regulations set out by the Board of Directors and made public by announcing such rules and regulations at a General Meeting and posting them in a Newsletter. After receipt of the second letter, should the action be continued, a third letter will be sent revoking the membership of that member.

- Additionally, at the recent general meeting, professional conduct was discussed to remind members to all conduct ourselves in a professional manner whenever representing the guild. Such conduct should include obeying the rules of the guild including following the guidelines for hanging in our shows, keeping the Longhouse facility tidy, avoiding gossip, negativity and criticism of other members and bringing to the attention of the board any issues or concerns that arise. Additionally, when sitting in the gallery, it is important to remember that our primary responsibility is to keep the gallery looking professional and open for business and greeting visitors to the gallery.

-Some reminders about the facility
- Please leave the plinths in the gallery arranged as they are.
- When you take tables out, please put them back on the trolley in the front storage area when you leave. There should be no tables left up in the lobby as a barrier between viewers and the paintings on the wall.
- Please don't stack chairs in the front storage closet more than six high, as they fall over when they are stacked too high.
- If you need to use the sound system/stereo, please refer to instructions in the membership binder, which is in the white shelving unit in the office area.Ź Please don't disconnect wires or mess with the system.
- Please keep all doors clear of debris per fire regulations.
- Please don't adjust the setting of the workshop mirror.
- Please remember to set the alarm EVERY time you leave the Longhouse if you are the last person out.
- The donations box should be left inside the gallery, as it is not a good idea to have money visible in the lobby from the outside.

- Paintings for the Coast Hotel will be hung the week of May 19 - please bring them to the Longhouse and leave them in the workroom with your registration form and fee on Monday, May 19.
- There has been a suggestion that we produce a book of the Poets & Painters show that would include all of the images and poems in the show. We understand that this can be done quite easily and inexpensively through one or more websites that do this. It could be a fund raising project for both the poets groups and SDAG. At the general meeting, we asked for interest and the majority of attendees expressed an interest in producing a book, but we didn't get any volunteers to actually undertake the work. The poets say they could come up with a team of volunteers to work on it, but we should have some representation from our Guild to ensure that the book is of the quality that would best present our images. So, if you are interested in working on this project, here are some things for which we need volunteers:

- Someone who is computer literate who could work with the website and lay out the book
- Someone to interface with the Poets
- Someone to gather copyright permissions for the participating artists (this would involve making up a form and getting all of the artists to sign it)
- Someone to follow up and ensure that we have quality images of each painting (Jean has photographed the paintings for the web site, so it would be a matter of checking the images and perhaps contacting some artists to see if they have a better quality image if their work is under glass, for example) If you are interested in working on this, please email Carla at cweaverconsultant@yahoo.ca to let her know what job you are willing to take on. If we don't get volunteers, then we won't take on the project.

- The next gallery show is Open Hearts (open theme). Registration for this show is Wednesday, April 30 from 9 TO 10 AM. Artists can bring 5 small or 3 medium to large paintings, as with any show. Paintings are left to the end of the show unless they sell first.

Celebration of Life
Members of the South Delta Artists Guild are invited to attend a Celebration of Life in memory of Joan Hunter, former member of our guild.

SDAG Email: info@deltaartguild.org
SDAG Website: www.deltaartguild.org.
Gallery Hours: Thursday to Sunday, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
Kiwanis Longhouse Centre for the Visual Arts
1710 - 56th St., Tsawwassen, B.C. (Located next to the South Delta Recreation Centre) (604) 943-3313

From The Board:
The mission statement of the South Delta Artists Guild is:
- The object of the guild is to promote the love of art in all forms, especially painting and to encourage all art interests in home and community.
- The Board considers this statement in all decisions made related to managing and operating the guild.
- The opening for Poets and Painters will be held on Saturday, March 29th from 1 to 4 PM. Everyone is welcome to attend, and please tell your friends and acquaintances about the event. There are also flyers at the front table at the Longhouse if you want to pass them out in the community. This event brings us together with two poets groups that have members throughout the Lower Mainland, bringing new people to the Longhouse, and attracting new people who may have an interest in poetry, or just be interested in this interesting approach.
- The Frame Company of Tsawwassen (44 Š 1363 56 Street) has offered to give a discount on framing to members of the South Delta Artists Guild.Ź Sarah Clark is the contact there, and she will offer a discount based on volume of framing done and frames selected.
- A complete list of the volunteer committees is posted on the bulletin board beside the kitchen. If you want to volunteer for any of the committees, you can do so by adding your name to that list.
- For artists interested in Mixed Media and Collage, please consider the two workshops by Donna Swain and one by Sandy Taylor, which are scheduled in April. These workshops are fast approaching and should prove to be interesting. Donna and Sandy are members of the guild as well as members of the Federation, and you can expect excellent workshops from both.
- Please note that towels for the washrooms (the flat folded paper towels) are stored in the closet in the back room by the paintersÕ sink and there is an extra box on top of the fridge. These flat folded towels are intended for the washrooms. The paper towelŹrolls are for the kitchen and should be kept for the kitchen. Thanks.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Ń February 11, 2008
Following the recent Visual Arts Summit, a new group of visual arts organizations has come together to form the Canadian Alliance for the Visual Arts (CAVA). Rather than an official organization, CAVA is an independent alliance of national visual arts organizations determined to advance the status of visual arts in Canada. Through communication, cooperation and collaborative action this network will achieve common goals, as outlined in the Visual Arts Summit's Collective Agenda. (www.visualartssummit.ca)
Representatives from eleven of Canada's national arts service organizations make up CAVAÕs membership. These organizations, though diverse in focus, each have a vested interest in the promotion and advancement of Canadian visual arts. CAVAÕs main objectives are to speak with a unified voice, to develop a cohesive strategy to improve the socio-economic conditions of artists, and to pursue the health of our art galleries, museums, artist-run centres and commercial art dealers so that CanadaÕs extraordinary visual arts can flourish.
After two productive teleconferences, CAVA held their first face-to-face meeting in Montreal on February 1, with another scheduled for the 14 of March. These meetings have set in motion a number of joint projects which will affect change for Canadian visual arts, both in the artistic community and the general public. The group looks forward to the upcoming announcements on the disbursement of new funding by the Canada Council for the Arts, and will be in attendance at the CouncilÕs meetings on February 12.
For more information on CAVA and their planned initiatives, contact any member.

From the Board: Carla Weaver is on vacation until February 12. In her absence, Vice President, Donna D'quino is the acting president. Please direct questions to Donna, or if she is unavailable, Marlene Strain or Jill Charuk. Thanks.

Critters, Beasties and Me show is being hung January 30th. Opening reception will be on Saturday, February 2nd in the afternoon, with OWL and birds in attendance. We will need some volunteer artists to help with the hands-on childrenÕs part of it. We will be getting together with the younger artists to create their own "critter, beastie or meÓ.

Because we are putting up a donation tree for OWL in the mall, we will have to have some sitters on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 'til the show ends. This may be difficult as it is always hard to fill the regular spaces at the guild. But it is for a good cause and more recognition for us.To volunteer, please email Lea Price at lea.price@dccnet.com

We are getting ready for the Poets and Painters show, which will be hung in the gallery on Wednesday, March 26. However, prior to that date, you will need to register to participate. There will be two ways to participate in this show: Option A or Option B. Artists can participate in either option or both. You can enter up to 5 small or 3 medium sized paintings in this show, just as in all shows. However, to do so, you will need to decide in advance so that there is time for painters to paint and poets to write. HereÕs how each option works:
Option A:
You will come to the gallery on Saturday, January 26 between 11 and 4, pay your registration, and draw a poem from a box. You will receive for $4.00 a poem in a sealed envelope, and you will go home and paint your impression of it, and bring it back to hang in the gallery on March 26. You can enter this option more than once - $4.00 per painting. On March 26, you will bring back your finished painting titled the same as the poem, and paintings and poems will be hung together in the gallery.
Option B:
You will leave at the gallery before January 20, a photo of a painting in a sealed envelope clipped together with your $4.00 registration. On the envelope, you will write the title of your painting. (You MUST title your painting.) On January 26, poets will draw these from a box, and then they will go away and write a poem that interprets the painting. The poets will bring these poems back on March 26 for hanging in the gallery beside your paintings. You will bring the original painting to the gallery on March 26.
You can elect to do either Option A or Option B or both, to total 5 small paintings or 3 medium paintings. Option A may be limited by the number of poems submitted.

Kiwanis Longhouse Centre for the Visual Arts
1710 – 56th St., Tsawwassen, B.C. (Located next to the South Delta Recreation Centre) (604) 943-3313

From the Board:
• The Gallery will be closed on the following dates over Christmas and New Years:  December 24, 25, 26, 27, 31 and January 1. There is a sign on the Longhouse door and the information has been posted on our website.
• Our annual Longhouse cleanup day will take place on Saturday, December 29 from 10 AM until around 3 PM.  If you are available that day, we’d appreciate the help to clean up the Longhouse including the gallery, our workroom, kitchen and storage areas. Additionally, we will paint the older plinths.
• The current gallery show, Big and Small will be up through December and January.  We did not have quite enough paintings submitted, so some artists were asked to bring additional paintings to fill the gallery and lobby.  That’s why you may see more paintings from some artists.
• The next gallery show is Critters, Beasties and Me.  We have had some feedback that artists don’t know what to paint for this event.  ANYTHING!  Animals (horses, cows, cats, barnyard scenes, moose, wolves, baby seals, elk, etc.), critters and beasties (insects, imaginary things and creatures, dragons, unicorns, aliens, use your imagination), birds, fish, me (self portraits, things that represent you, abstract expressions of feelings, etc.)  Look at a Dr. Suess book and his paintings …  what wonderful images!! Lea finds inspiration from animals, their love, trust, curiosity and humor. We encourage you to stretch your imagination and paint something for this show.  Hanging date for this show is Wednesday, January 30.
Additionally, Critters, Beasties and Me was to partner with the Humane Society to try to help them raise some funds.  However, there has been a different turn of events, as this week, it was announced that the Humane Society will no longer be operating the animal shelter in Delta.  We spoke with the municipality, which will be operating the shelter now, and it was suggested that we not fund raise for the shelter at this time.  Therefore, we will be providing additional information about this aspect of our show at the next meeting.
The Opening for this show will be Saturday, February 2 in the afternoon.  We could use some additional volunteers to help with the opening and also with children’s activities.  We will be getting together with younger artists to create their own critter, beastie or “me”.  To volunteer, please email Lea Price.

• We are getting ready for the Poets and Painters show, which will be hung in the gallery on Wednesday, March 26. Here’s how each option works:
• Geoff Hacker and Lennart Osterlind have agreed to co-chair this year’s Oil and Water show. Thanks Geoff and Lennart!

Upcoming Shows in the Longhouse per Lea Price:

1.Big and Small show, hanging Wed. Dec. 5th sizes – the largest of the “small", no larger than 16 united inches, or 8 x 8, and the smallest of the “large” 36 x 36”. There can be one large entry by each artist, and up to 5 or the smaller ones. Show ends the late afternoon of Jan. 27th. Correction: Note the Big and Small show registration and hanging takes place Dec. 5th as stated above, not Nov. 28th as stated below in the minutes.

2.Critters, Beasties and Me” show, hanging Wed. Jan. 30th with the opening  Sat.,Feb.2nd. Like last year, with our show “For the Birds”, this is an effort by the guild to raise the awareness of the Longhouse by contributing to the community by combing with the Delta Humane Society for the show. We will be matching our artists with children to create their own “critter, beastie or me” during the opening in the workshop.  Show continues to Feb. 2nd.

From the Board:
• Come to the December 3rd meeting and help us celebrate Christmas at our annual Christmas party.  It's pot luck, so bring a snack and enjoy socializing with your fellow artists!
• This is a reminder that dogs are not allowed in the Longhouse, so please leave them at home when you come to the guild.  We understand that dogs are our beloved family members, but more importantly, our fellow guild members are important, and we must consider their allergies.
